What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean? Mr. May asked me to think about what discovery means. I think discovery means to find something new. In my picture I am finding treasure. Treasure is a valuable item. A valuable item could also be a treasure chest. I like finding new things. That is what discovery means to me.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game? I researched the game Block Blaster because I thought it would be an effective arcade game. The name of the creator is Dan Jewett. These are the instructions. A ball shoots up from the bottom of the screen. There are blocks above that do not move. You want to keep the ball in the air to destroy all of the blocks. You keep your ball in the air by dragging your mouse to move the platform on which the ball bounces. Your pad moves wherever your mouse moves. You keep doing that until all the blocks are destroyed. The object of Block Blaster is to destroy all the blocks with a ball by keeping the ball up. The instructions for the game are displayed under the window where the game is played. I rate this game 3 with 4 being the highest.
To build this game I need three sticks, one rubber band, 20 card board boxes, and one bottle of glue. I will need $45 to build it and $8 to buy. You can visit block blaster at:
http://ww10.freearcade.com/BlockBlaster.flash/BlockBlaster.html .Design Brief What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game? The name of our arcade game is Target Golf. You hit the ball and try to get it in the hole or hit the target. The rules of the game are displayed on the side of the game. I rate this game 3 out of a 1-4 difficulty rating system. You win this game by getting the ball in the hole or hitting the target. You get tickets to buy prizes if you win the game.
A brief description of our blueprint shows a lane for the ball to roll through, a club to hit the ball, walls so it does not launch out of the lane, a paper plate as the target and a tin container as the hole.
We would need a box, a tin container, a paper plate, duct tape or packaging tape, a jar, a cup, candy, prizes, a mini disco ball, tickets, a shoe box and cardboard to build this game. It would take about 5 weeks to finish building it in a 45 minute span two days a week. A problem we foresee happening is the game falling apart and having to reinforce the game every class. Praise: The game seemed well constructed with a clear starting point. The lights made it feel like a real arcade game. The game was enjoyable.
Question: Can the player perhaps have another choice of clubs?
Polish: Make sure the point system is clearly defined.
Student Comment: We tried to make our arcade game, Target Golf, very enjoyable. We put a dot at the end of the game so that the gamers would know from where to hit the ball. We thought that if we put a mini disco ball for effect then more people will come to our game. I am glad you enjoyed Target Golf. We have clubs for right-handed people and left-handed people. You asked about the point system being clearly defined. We are trying to make the instructions more clear because before, we had to tear down our game and make it totally new. We had a cup that was supposed to be the bonus jackpot worth 50 tickets.

Praise: I love the golf game and that you came up with two different ways to score.
Question: Could you use a different ball to make it harder or easier to score?
Polish: You could make the bottom flatter.
Student Comment: I am glad you loved Target Golf! We wanted there to be an easier way to get tickets. We have upgraded balls in the store for ten tickets to make it easier to score. You can get the upgraded balls in the store for 10 tickets. We did the best we could to make the base as flat as possible. I think that the bottom got bumped when Mac and I carried our game, Target Golf, into the multi–purpose room 10 times.

Praise: Great ideas on the Wiki! There was so much detail. You created a challenging game that anyone can play. I love the strobe light and ticket machine!
Question: Are you planning to put up the guard rails or walls on the sides from the wiki to trap the balls?
Polish: You might want to make the instructions very clear. For example, give people a set number of turns. Explain clearly when you get points for hitting target or landing on it.
Student Comment: Thanks! I am glad you liked our ideas on the wiki. Our ideas on the wiki were what we thought the game, Target Golf, would look like. The ticket machine was hard to make because I had to tape all the stray tickets to the roll. We were going to put on walls or guard rails but we did not have the time. We will figure a way to make it happen. We tried to explain the instructions better. Mac and I had to totally change our game. By the time we had changed Target Golf, the instructions were already taped on.

Make It Better How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better? Reflection on Project What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation? We could put on guard rails or walls on each side of Target Golf. Specifically, how would we do this? By putting pieces of cardboard on the sides of the place that you stand and any open areas. Reflection on Process What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project? I learned that the arcade game is not all about the prizes. What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project? I learned how to build an arcade game out of only cardboard and duct tape. What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project? I think that now it will be much easier to build the boat now that I know how to work with cardboard. What did you like about the project that helped your learning? I liked that building an arcade game challenged me. It also made me work very hard. What could have been done differently to help your learning? Our arcade game should get walls or rails on the side.
A Final Reflection:
This is what we can do to make the game, Target Golf, better. I think that we could have put guard rails on the sides so that the ball would not roll out of the lane. We also could have put foot- steps where you wanted the gamers to stand. We would accomplish this by tracing our foot-steps so that the gamers will know where to stand. We could have put more decorations on the game. I learned that the arcade game is not all about the prizes. I learned how to build an arcade out of only cardboard and duct tape. I think that it will be much easier to build a boat now that I know how to build with only cardboard and duct tape. I liked that building an arcade game challenged me. I also liked that it made me work hard. I could have made my game bigger. I thought this was a great experience! Crusie Arcade Game Presentation - Gaming Week:
